Frequently Asked Questions

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine aren't familiar to everyone. That's ok! Here are some commonly asked questions to guide you through your first visit. As always, feel free to reach out with questions.

This is a great question. Comfort is key! Choose looser fitting clothing that is breathable and allows access to areas of discomfort. You may bring something to change into if you are coming to clinic from work. Think of what would be good to take a nap in, pants that can roll up, shirts with wide collars and sleeves that can move easily.

Unlike a massage you do not need to completely undress for a treatment. There are occasions where items may need to be removed for access and we offer sheets and blankets to keep you covered and comfortable.

No! The needles we use in clinic are very small and not hollow like the ones used for vaccines or a blood draw. There are times when you can feel the "Da Qi" or arrival of Qi (energy) when the needles are inserted and that is the energy of your body acknowledges the energy of the needle and te magic if acupuncture starts. However this sensation is not painful and does not last long.

If at any point you experience discomfort of any kind communicate that immediately. There are ways to manipulate the needle to calm any undesirable sensations. Discomfort is never a part of your treatment plan!

The first acupuncture consultation is longer than subsequent sessions, usually lasting 60 to 90 minutes. We will review and discuss you medical history, asking about your main complaint, health background, eating habits, sleep quality, emotional state, and other aspects of your life. In traditional Chinese medicine, we ustillize tongue and or pulse diagnisis to asses the energetic state and the root of the disharmony. After this, a personalized treatment plan is drawn up, and the first needling treatment is performed in the same consultation. Needles are retained anywhere fron 20-35 minutes. After the needles are removed there may be additional therapies such as cupping or gua sha depending on specific patient needs and goals of the treatment.

You can do most of the normal activities after your treatment such as drive, go back to work, gentle excersize like yoga or even shop.

There are few things that are restricted such as going to the gym, strenuous work, eating heavy meals or consuming alcohol. This is because when we move the qi in the body there has to be a period of rest for everythig to settle into balance.
